New app! Gecko is a browser for Windows 10 Mobile based on the Firefox 155 engine, ported to phones. Warning: Nightly is an unstable testing and development platform. By default, Firefox Nightly automatically sends data to Mozilla — and sometimes our partners — to help us handle problems and try ideas. Firefox Nightly gets updated every day and is designed to showcase the more experimental builds of Firefox. The Nightly channel allows users to experience the newest Firefox innovations in an unstable environment and provide feedback on features and performance to help determine what makes the final release.

Features:

— modern Gecko engine from Firefox 155.0.1 with a JavaScript JIT compiler: opens sites that no longer work in Edge;

— GPU-accelerated page rendering (WebRender via Direct3D 11) and repainting of only changed areas: heavy sites like the YouTube homepage load and scroll quickly;

— hardware H.264 video decoding: frames are not processed by the CPU. On YouTube, the browser automatically selects H.264, even if the site offers VP9;

— video is output directly to the display's hardware layer, bypassing GPU compositing when nothing is overlaid on top. This ensures smooth playback of 1080p60 YouTube videos in full-screen mode, in both portrait and landscape orientations;

— frame rate synchronized with the display rather than a software timer;

— full-screen video with screen rotation support;

— login windows for Google, VK, and other services open in a new tab, and the browser automatically returns to the original site after login;

— pinch-to-zoom page scaling;

— tab support;

— Firefox telemetry disabled;

— quiet logging mode by default; detailed debug logs can be enabled in the settings.

Web technologies.

What's New

Daily use:

— Phone clipboard: copying and pasting works in both directions between the browser and other apps;

— The keyboard appears less often and doesn't pop back up while you're selecting text in the address bar and other fields;

— The "Back" button: closes the keyboard, menu, dialog, full-screen mode, goes back in the tab history, closes the currently open tab, opens the page, and only then minimizes the browser;

— Downloads: files go to the Downloads\Gecko folder on any phone; you can choose the folder in the settings; "Save as" and file uploads to websites work;

— Taps in landscape orientation no longer shift to the left;

— Scrolling the feed during loading is smoother; the "jump" speed is similar to Firefox for Android;

— Taps on small buttons (CAPTCHAs, etc.) are more accurate;

— Text on "desktop" pages without mobile formatting is zoomed in, like in Firefox for Android;

— Discord opens after logging in (the website sees a desktop browser);

— Permission requests (microphone, etc.) are displayed on the screen and don't go under the system panel.

Video, calls, and web technologies:

— VK Video: the browser crashes less often on ads before the video and when switching between videos;

— Microphone in WebRTC: the website requests access, the system asks for permission, the microphone works, and it works again in the same session;

— WebAssembly is working again (it was included in version 140 but didn't run);

— VP9 and AV1 are supported on any website that has H.264, not just YouTube: the video is played through the hardware decoder.

Memory and stability:

— The browser monitors the 32-bit address space (2 GB per process) and frees up memory in advance, rather than when allocation fails;

— Garbage collection is dosed when memory is low: on the Lumia 650, it used to freeze the interface for 5-20 seconds; now, it's just brief pauses of 1-3 seconds;

— Interface archives are compressed: this saves about 70 MB of address space;

— Fixed a freeze of the image after the keyboard when memory is low (HP Elite X3 with Discord): the browser received input, but the screen didn't update;

— Sessions are saved again when there are many tabs open and closed tabs;

— Fixed crashes on startup and a crash when responding to a system request for microphone access;

— For phones with more than 1.5 GB of RAM, an economical JavaScript memory growth mode has been added.

For low-end phones (Lumia 650 and similar):

— Fewer frame drops in video;

— After a video frame, only the changed area is redrawn, not the entire screen.
